Previously unpublished image.
Hundreds of people crowded on to the pavement of St. James’s St. to catch a glimpse of one of Britain’s best known television personalities, Pat Phoenix. “Coronation Street” had come in force, with not just Elsie Tanner but also Bert Tilsley (Peter Dudley) and Elsie’s one-time son-in-law, Ivan Cheveski (Ernst Walder) arriving in a vintage Rolls Royce. The three personalities were in town to open the Mademoiselle Beauty Clinic which is owned by Mrs. Lynette Tattersall of Simonstone, a friend of Miss Phoenix. Before beginning her marathon autograph signing session, Miss Phoenix received a bouquet from five year old Mandy Ashworth of Simonstone. She then had a few words to say to the crowd, welcoming them to the shop. She also said there was no truth in the rumour that Ena Sharples was leaving the programme. The first fan through the door, Mrs. Wynne Price, received a glass of champagne.Previously unpublished image. Stars from “The Street” seen at the opening, Ernst Walder and Pat Phoenix.
